7 Myths about Reducing Wrinkles | Elite Facial Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Tampa FL

It is an unfortunate fact of life that we will all age and, eventually, we will all get wrinkles.  So reducing wrinkles has been a long sought goal for many.  The fight against visible aging has been waged as far back as we can remember.  Beauty secrets are passed down through generations in the hopes of warding off these lines that reveal our age. While there is no fountain of youth, there are certainly things that can be done to prevent the appearance of wrinkles.  Most beauty secrets, however, have at least an element of myth to them.  Here is the truth behind 7 popular myths on reducing wrinkles.

Common Myths about Reducing Wrinkles

1. Tanning beds are a safer way to tan.  This is a common myth perpetuated by tanning salons everywhere.  It sounds good but simply isn’t true.  Sun damage is caused by the penetrating UV (ultraviolet) radiation produced by the sun. Woman Tanning in Tanning Bed Tanning beds mimic the sun and actually emit higher levels of radiation that the sun does. The UV rays actually damage the structure of the skin causing it to lose elasticity and integrity, which eventually causes wrinkles.  It is important to know that there is no safe tan and reducing wrinkles in a tanning bed just won’t work.

2. Facial exercises will prevent wrinkles.  We have all seen videos of people practicing facial stretches and exercises that claim to reduce or prevent wrinkles. The truth is that flexing facial muscles over time may actually cause wrinkles to form. Many wrinkles, including those across the forehead and around the eyes and mouth are, in part, caused by contraction of facial muscles and daily habits like smiling and squinting.  As we age our skin becomes less elastic and less able to “bounce back” from continued muscle contraction, which is a cause of wrinkles.  Using facial exercises is not an effective way of reducing wrinkles and may actually cause them.

3. Cucumbers will reduce wrinkles on the eyes. While it is true that putting cucumbers or tea bags on the eyes may temporarily reduce puffiness, it is a very fleeting fix.  The botanicals found in these items will reduce irritation in the skin but the real reason it works (at least for a while) is the coolness.  It is the chilled cucumber slices and tea bags that reduce swelling.  This helps to smooth out wrinkles for a short time but the effects of this type of spa treatment generally fade by the time we get home.  There are far longer lasting solutions for reducing wrinkles such as dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing or eye lid surgery for those heavily affected by droopy eyelids.

Cucumbers are not effective for Reducing Wrinkles

4. My mom had wrinkles, so I will too.  While there is some truth that genetics are involved in how your skin will age, there are many ways to prevent wrinkles that your Mom may not have heeded.  Studies have shown that even patients with genetic predispositions to wrinkly skin can prevent or reduce them by simply taking care of themselves.  Eating the right foods, staying hydrated, not smoking and staying out of the sun can reduce your odds of getting wrinkles even if your mom (or dad) had them.

5. Expensive wrinkle creams work better.  This is simply not true.  The cost of a product does not reflect how well it works and, in fact, many expensive anti-aging creams have a significant amount of perfume in them.  The perfumes actually dry out the skin, negating any benefits the creams may have.  It is also important to know that even expensive products can’t erase wrinkles after they have formed.  Only a cosmetic surgeon can remove or reduce wrinkles.  Even if you are not ready to get Botox or try dermal fillers to reduce your lines, the make-up products available through a plastic surgeon are superior to those you purchase at a mall.

6. Incorporating oily fish into your diet will prevent aging.  Unfortunately there is actually no scientific evidence to support the claim that eating oily fish or taking fish oil pills will prevent the formation of wrinkles.  Research does show, however that oily fish is an excellent source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are quite beneficial for the health of your heart, circulatory system and your overall health.

Cosmetic Procedures aimed at Reducing Wrinkles are too Expensive

7. Cosmetic procedures are too expensive.  This is a common myth that simply isn’t true any longer.  Cosmetic surgeons today offer a wider variety of wrinkle reducing products that are available at lower price points than ever.  According to Dr. Dominic M. Castellano, a facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, “over the last twenty years, many new injectable products have been developed that are excellent at reducing wrinkles.  Botox is far more affordable today but there are many dermal fillers that are also within reach of the average consumer that wants to look better.”  Injectibles such as Botox and dermal fillers such as Restalyne and Juvederm not only erase wrinkles within days, but also give you more bang for your buck because the results last for months.  It is also important to note that consumers spend millions of dollars each year on products and services that claim to reduce wrinkles but that don’t work.   Surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures are proven to be effective and surprisingly affordable.
