There are many people in Tampa that are interested in ways to reduce wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance.  However, some people are confused about which treatment is best to reduce wrinkles.  Both Botox and Dermal Fillers are used to diminish fine lines and creases in the face but they work in entirely different ways.

Botox Reduces and Prevents Wrinkles

Botox is a drug that is made from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and is better known as the toxin that causes botulism.  However, Botox Cosmetic is an extremely safe product that has been on the market for more than a decade.  The toxin has been harnessed and is a powerful tool to reduce and prevent facial wrinkles, as well as relieve muscle spasms, stop excessive sweating, ease migraine pain and more.   Botox injections work by paralyzing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles or by blocking the nerves that trigger the muscles.  An injection placed in the proper location, will allow the muscle to relax and let the skin stay smooth.  This is how Botox erases wrinkles.

It is important to know that Botox is a very benign drug when used by a well-qualified and trained practitioner.  Most of the bad press has come from use of a counterfeit product or a result of Botox being administered by untrained, non-medical personnel.  Dr. Dominic Castellano, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, explains that the administration of Botox is part art and part science.  “The exact placement of the injection is critical as is the proper dosage….done correctly, the procedure can reduce wrinkles and allow the patient to look naturally younger.”

Dermal Fillers Reduce and Fill In Wrinkles

Dermal fillers can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles but do so in an entirely different way.  Dermal fillers are made up of a variety of substances, but most of the top brands use hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance that is found in skin tissue.  Fillers such as Juvederm, Belotero and Restylane all use a hyaluronic base that provides volume to the skin tissue and fills in the crevices in the skin tissue.  Radiesse is another great filler for deep lines and volume.  Rather than paralyze the muscles or nerve ending, dermal fillers simply replace the natural tissue that has been lost due to aging and gravity to restore volume and provide a more youthful appearance .  These fillers also help promote the growth of collagen that helps the skin stay more supple.

Like Botox, dermal fillers should only be administered by a well-trained medical practitionerin an accredited medical setting.  While these substances are considered to be very safe, the quality of the results will depend upon the training and experience of the practitioner.   Each different brand of filler has specific benefits; some are used to fill in severe lines like the nasolabial folds (smile lines or laugh lines) near the mouth whereas others are used on very fine lines such as crow’s feet near the eyes.  A qualified plastic surgeon knows which product will work the best on each area of your face and which will provide optimal results.

Botox and Dermal Fillers Work Together to Reduce Wrinkles

It is not uncommon for a plastic surgeon to use both Botox and a dermal filler to reduce facial wrinkles. Depending on the area being treated and the severity of the lines, a combination of products may be the best solution to restore the appearance of youth.  The two different injections can work together to smooth out the skin and prevent more wrinkles from occurring during the treatment period.
