Sun damaged skin is very common in residents of Tampa. The harsh sun dries out skin tissue and creates premature aging. The best strategy is to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or wear a protective sun screen at all times. However, for those already affected by sun damage, there is a way to help reverse the wrinkles and improve the appearance… Laser Skin Resurfacing. The laser skin resurfacing procedure helps remove damaged tissue to allow new skin to move to the surface.
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing is a treatment for reducing facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin. Laser skin resurfacing removes skin very precisely, layer by layer. This popular procedure is known by several other names, including lasabrasion, laser peel or laser vaporization. This targeted approach means there are fewer problems with hypopigmentation, or a lightening of skin.
The laser beam used in laser resurfacing will remove your outer layer of skin, called the epidermis. It simultaneously heats the underlying skin, called the dermis. This action works to stimulate growth of new collagen fibers. As the treated area heals, the new skin that forms is smoother and firmer.
How Laser Skin Resurfacing Restores Sun Damaged Skin
The sun can harm the skin in multiple ways. While the sun’s rays can make us feel good, the effects of over exposure can be severe. The sun penetrates the skin tissue and causes the breakdown of connective tissue known as elastin. This makes the skin begin to droop, stretch, and make it difficult to bounce back into form. Once the elastin has been damaged, wrinkles will begin to form in areas of the face that are subject to a lot of movement; such as around the eyes, mouth, and forehead region. Too much sun can also cause pigment changes which will allow age spots (or brown spots) to appear and add blotchiness to delicate facial skin.
Laser skin resurfacing can remove the outer layer of damaged skin while stimulating the underlying layers to foster collagen growth. Once the top layer is eliminated, a new healthier-looking skin emerges to the surface. This new dermal tissue will be smooth and usually pink until it has thoroughly healed. When completely cured, the skin will be healthier and more youthful looking overall.
Different Laser Surfacing Resurfacing Treatments
According to Dr. Michael Jasin, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, not all laser surfacing treatments are equal. There are different types of lasers in use across the area that will produce different results. Some lasers do not reach the lower tissues layers as effectively as others, and some require quite long recovery times. Dr. Jasin favors the Erbium Yag laser and feels that it is more effective than fractionated lasers. This laser is absorbed by the skin more effectively than the CO2 laser. Because of this, there is much less thermal injury, or heat damage, to the skin. This produces the best results but does require up to 3 or 4 weeks of healing time before the skin has returned to normal coloration.
Following the laser resurfacing procedure, the patient must apply the prescribed ointment and stay out of the sun during the healing period. The skin may feel tight and remain pink during this time, but there is special make-up that can be used to cover up the face until it has returned to a normal hue. Laser skin resurfacing is an effective way to treat imperfections of the skin such as lines and wrinkles, brown spots, acne scars, moles and other skin lesions as well as scars due to trauma or surgery. It is one of the best treatments for sun damaged skin.
