When someone mentions that they are thinking of getting a facelift, most people automatically think that other than the doctor chosen, the procedure is pretty much the same.  This is far from the truth!  There are so many different facelift techniques available in Tampa that it is easy to get confused about all the options and the benefits of each different facelift method.  A facelift can help you look years younger but be careful to do your research before committing to surgery as the results can vary greatly.

Different Types of Facelifts in Tampa:

There is such a variety of procedures all grouped under the term “facelift” and that it is hard to understand how they can share the same name.  There are the traditional facelifts, mini-facelifts, liquid facelifts, laser facelifts, mid-facelifts, injectable mid-facelifts and thermage or thermal cool facelifts.  There are likely other methods of reducing wrinkles that use the term but offer nothing even close to a facelift as we understand it.   The dissimilarity between the procedures are so divergent that it seems only someone with a medical degree could explain the distinction.  Here we will provide some information to help you select the right technique and the right doctor.

What is a Facelift?

According to one dictionary, a facelift is plastic surgery to remove wrinkles and other signs of aging from your face; an incision made near the hair line to allow skin to be tightened, or a renovation that improves outside appearance (such as “the building had a facelift to appear more modern”).   If you disregard the last definition, the two other descriptions only explain a few of the methods in use today to reduce wrinkles.

A traditional facelift (rhytidectomy) is generally done by a plastic surgeon operating in a fully accredited medical facility.  The surgery can be quite extensive involving multiple incisions that allow the surgeon to lift and tighten both the outer layer of skin as well as the underlying muscles and tissue.  This full surgery is aimed at providing permanent wrinkle reduction from the forehead to the neck.  A traditional facelift is still available in Tampa but its use is rather limited now due to the improvements in surgical techniques that make a “mini-facelift” or “less invasive facelift” more popular, yet equally effective.   The downside of a traditional or full facelift is the amount of recovery time necessary, the high cost and the possibility of complications simply due to the more complex surgery.

What is a Mini-Facelift?

The facelifts referred to as mini-facelifts can be accomplished using a variety of surgical techniques; but note that the term “surgical” is included in this definition.  Some of the procedures called “facelifts” are in fact, not true facelifts because they are not surgical lifts.  With a mini-facelift, there are generally a smaller number of incisions made in the hairline or behind the ears that allow the doctor to lift and tighten the facial tissue.  Each physician may do a slightly different “mini-lift” so it is important to have a consultation in advance of scheduling any surgery to fully understand the method that is to be used.  Mini-facelifts have become more widespread because of the lesser recovery time needed, the lower costs and the high degree of success with the less invasive operations.

Dr. Dominic Castellano, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, explains his signature facelift, the Simplicity Lift.  “The Simplicity Lift was developed to produce permanent and consistently excellent quality results with minimal downtime.  This lift is done using only two small incisions in front of and behind the ears which allows me to tighten both the skin and the muscle tissue to reduce wrinkles and improve appearance.  A special “pulley-stitch” that I patented allows the facelift to remain in place while providing a more natural appearance than the stretched look common with the older style surgery. “  The Simplicity Facelift is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure, with most patients recovering in 4 to 5 days as opposed to several weeks required for a traditional face lift.

What about the Other Facelifts?

Many of the other procedures listed as “facelifts” are not true surgical lifts.  While some of these “lifts” have their uses and benefits, they will not offer the permanent improvements of either the traditional or less invasive lifts.  For example, an injectable (or liquid) facelift can be an excellent way to reduce facial lines especially in the mid-face region, but will last for a year or less depending on the dermal fillers used for the procedure.  If you are seeking a quick way to get rid of wrinkles in time for the upcoming wedding or class reunion, this may be a perfect solution.  Also it is an excellent way to “try on” a facelift before having the actual surgery.

Laser Facelifts and Thermal Cool Facelifts are really just treatments for the surface of the skin only.  Either method can tighten the skin somewhat and removed fine lines, but does not actually tighten the skin or remove the folds of excess skin.  Either of these would be a superficial treatment without much staying power and often do not allow the desired results in the first place.

So how do you choose the right procedure?  Dr. Dominic insists that he have a consultation with each patient prior to scheduling any surgery in order to determine the best course of action to achieve the desired effects.  If you are interested in determining if the Simplicity Facelift is right for you, please contact the Elite Facial Plastic Surgery to set up a complimentary consultation with Dr. Dominic.  Elite Facial Plastic Surgery is a fully accredited medical facility located in Tampa Florida.
