Why do I have more Wrinkles around the Eyes than Elsewhere? | Elite Facial Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Tampa FL

Women in Tampa often wonder why they seem to get more wrinkles around the eyes than elsewhere on the face or neck.  It is not a big mystery but happens for a couple of reasons.  First, the skin around the eyes is some of the thinnest on the body and gets the more exercise than anywhere else.  This means that wrinkles around the eyes are often the first sign of aging that most women will see when they look in the mirror.

Wrinkles around the eyes can occur at a relatively young age.  Some women in their early 20’s may see fine lines begin to develop but it generally is not common until age 30 or older.  The age that crow’s feet and under eye wrinkles first appear will depend on many factors.

What Causes Wrinkles around the Eyes?

There are six primary factors that cause wrinkles to start appearing around the eyes.  Some of these can be controlled to some degree, but others are simply due to genetics and therefore not something that can be changed.

1)      Facial Expressions are one of the main reasons why wrinkles develop.  Most of us use our eyes to convey feelings and express opinions.  We smile with our eyes, ask questions with a simple raised eyebrow, and we communicate a host of information without even being aware of it.  We also squint to protect our vision from the sun.  All of this causes creases and lines to develop.

2)      Sun damage is a huge reason why some women age faster than others.  Those that have a light complexion are usually at most risk from the sun, as well as those from warmer, sunnier climates.  If you are out in the sun without a protective sunscreen, hat and sunglasses, you are likely to get crow’s feet far earlier than your friends.

3)      Smoking is another factor that can cause premature aging.  Smoking dries out the skin which makes it more likely to form wrinkles.  Smoking also damages the connective tissues that give the skin the elastic properties to allow our skin to bounce back into shape.  Plus, smokers often will blink or squint to keep the smoke from their eyes and do so more frequently than non-smokers which will allow crow’s feet to start earlier in life.

4)      The amount of water contained in the skin is also important as wrinkles start earlier in dried tissue than in well-hydrated membranes.  This means that not only should you drink an adequate amount of water each day, but also take care to use moisturizer to keep the water in the skin tissue.

5)      Eating a good healthy diet that includes all the right vitamins and minerals can also help to slow the aging process.  A diet high in sugar and fat can lead to the breakdown of collagen and elastin which makes the production of wrinkles happen more quickly.

6)      Stress can also take a toll on your skin, especially the delicate skin around the eyes.  When we are stressed, we tend to frown more and narrow our eyes in anger or frustration.  It is also common for a person to run their eyes more frequently when stressed which can pull on the tender tissue near the eyes.

Aging Triggers Wrinkles around the Eyes

The number of years we have lived, of course, is one of the main reasons for aging of the skin.  Even if we try to limit our facial movement, protect our eyes with sunglasses to avoid squinting and wear moisturizer and sun screen, we still will eventually develop wrinkles.  As we get older, our skin loses moisture naturally and we also lose volume which makes our already thin skin even more fragile.  We will all experience a breakdown of the connective tissue and gravity will pull at our exterior which will trigger the formation of lines and creases.

How to Reduce Wrinkles around the Eyes

While it is not possible to ever avoid wrinkles around the eyes, there are some ways to reduce wrinkles once they occur.  Of course, the best advice is to do your best to avoid the triggers that cause premature aging of the skin.  But if you already have noticeable crow’s feet or bags under your eyes, then a good plastic surgeon can help you to roll back the clock and smooth out your skin.  In the Tampa area, Dr. Dominic Castellano has treated many people that want to regain a more youthful appearance.  Dr. Dominic is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with year’s of experience with using Botox and dermal fillers to help lessen the presence of wrinkles.

Botox is a way to temporarily paralyze the facial muscles under the skin that have created the wrinkles in the first place.  Botox can work for up to four to six months to relax the muscle and allow the skin to become smoother and less wrinkled.  This injectable medication also will prevent wrinkles from occurring in the treated area during the period it is active.  Once the Botox wears off, another treatment will restore the youthful look again.  For deeper lines, dermal fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane can fill in the lines with a hyaluronic acid that adds volume and helps the skin to create new connective tissue.  Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body and is a safe way to treat many facial lines and other flaws.

All injections should be done by a well-qualified medical practitioner in an accredited medical facility for both safety and aesthetic reasons.  Dr. Dominic is one of the best-known facial surgeons in the region and has trained in the art of injectables for many years.  For the best results, it is critical that the injections be made in precisely the right area and in the right dosage in order to provide the most natural looking results.
