Many people in Tampa are familiar with the term ‘laser skin resurfacing’ but often consider it just another phrase for ‘microdermabrasion’. However, the two non-surgical procedures are actually quite different from each other. Laser skin resurfacing offers a deeper level of treatment than microdermabrasion and can treat a much wider array of common skin conditions. Laser treatments can reduce wrinkles, tighten the skin, erase acne scars and age spots as well as treat a variety of blemishes.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Offers More than Microdermabrasion
While microdermabrasion is a useful treatment for some minor skin irregularities, it is a remedy that only works on the very outermost layer of skin. Microdermabrasion is basically a mechanized exfoliation of the skin and is used to remove the dead skin cells that accumulate on the epidermis. This can help produce noticeably smoother skin by allowing healthy skin cells to rise to the surface. It is also a way to reduce active acne, lesson the appearance of some mild scarring and correct mild hyperpigmentation (or discoloration). If the imperfection affects the mid-layer or deeper dermal levels, then laser skin resurfacing would be the better treatment options.
Laser skin resurfacing uses high-intensity and highly concentrated pulses of light to vaporize the skin, one layer at a time. When used by a skilled plastic facial surgeon, the laser can remove damaged skin tissue in specific areas of the face or neck to treat wrinkles, age spots, acne scars and a variety of skin blemishes that are contained within the layers of the skin. The laser treatments can erase small wrinkles and moderate facial lines, as well as smooth out the appearance of scars. It is an excellent way to remove marks left by adolescent acne, chicken pox or even scars left from minor cuts or facial injuries. Laser skin resurfacing can also erase or significantly reduce age spots or other skin discoloration as well as treat lesions or growths in the upper layers of the skin.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Can Tighten the Skin for a Younger Appearance
When lasers are used over a broader section of the face, they can help both smooth and tighten the dermal layers. This procedure can produce results that mimic a facelift for those that are not yet candidates for facial surgery. The results can last for a year or more depending on the elasticity of the skin and the skin care efforts of the patient. In fact, this procedure is often considered a non-surgical facelift because of its effectiveness in creating a naturally younger look.
The recovery time needed following a laser procedure can vary depending on the size and depth of the treated area. For full facial resurfacing, the recovery time can take a few weeks to a few months for the best result to show. For small scars, the healing time will be of a shorter duration. Immediately following a treatment, the skin will be tender and pink for several days until the initial healing period is complete. Afterwards, as new cells appear, the skin will remain red although special salves and make-up can help cover the treated area. During the recovery period, it is important to follow all of the doctor’s instructions and to stay out of the sun until the skin has fully healed.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedures Differ
While the process for laser skin resurfacing is similar, there are different types of lasers that are used depending on the plastic surgery practice selected. The two most common lasers for cosmetic use are the CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser and the Erbiam: YAG laser. According to Dr. Dominic M. Castellano, a facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, the Erbiam: YAG laser produces the best results with the least amount of side-effects. He says “the Erbium: YAG laser can effectively treat small or large areas with minimal chance of burning the surrounding tissue. It also causes less swelling, bruising or redness, which means that the recovery time is greatly improved over the older CO2 laser therapy.”
