Some people have them at age 30, some not until age 50, but eventually all of us will get facial wrinkles.  In the past, getting rid of wrinkles involved major surgery and required lots of downtime for healing.  But today, there are many quick and easy ways to diminish the appearance of lines and creases.  In fact, many procedures can be done in less than an hour and do not necessitate any time off from work.

Sometimes called the Lunchtime Facelift or Liquid Facelift, there are a variety of non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures that can help eliminate facial lines and wrinkles.  These involve injectable products such as Botox or Xeomin that can help relax facial muscles and tighten up the skin.  Botox and similar drugs also can help the prevent formation of new wrinkles while the medication is active in the body.  These injectable products are not permanent solutions, but Botox can last 3 to 6 months at a time before another treatment is required.

The injection of dermal fillers is another method to reduce wrinkles and plump up facial tissue to restore a youthful appearance.  Dermal fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero and Radiesse replace the lost collagen or fat in our skin to fill in deeper creases or lines, or can be used to add fullness to areas where the skin has begun to sag.  Each type of filler has a slightly different formula and works best on specific areas of the face.  For example, Juvederm and Belotero are extremely smooth fillers and are often used in the lips and in the lipstick lines around the mouth.  Radiesse, by so comparison, is a slightly thicker, longer lasting filler that is injected deeper under the skin tissue to fill in larger facial furrows or used to add volume to the chin or cheek area.

All of these products are injectable, so they do not require any anesthesia or surgery but make sure that you go to a well-qualified, accredited medical facility to get the work done.  According to Dr. Michael Jasin, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Tampa Fl, there is an art to injecting Botox and dermal fillers in such a way that the patient looks naturally refreshed, not plastic.   These products need to be placed in exactly the right spot to either relax the muscle or to fill in the wrinkles and have to be injected in the correct amount.  “It is really easy for an inexperienced practitioner to inject too much and the results of doing so are often undesirable.” In fact, if Botox is injected in the wrong place, there are some serious side-effects that can occur. Some patients have experienced droopy eyelids, muscle weakness or difficulty swallowing as a result of the medication paralyzing an unintended muscle.  With dermal fillers, the most common problem with incorrect dosing is an exaggerated and unnatural puffiness that can last 6 to 18 months until the drug wears off.  For these reasons, make sure that you choose a well-qualified provider.

When the injections are done by an expert, there is no pain and most patients will have only minor bruising at the injection site which will go away within a day or so.  The effects will be apparent within a day and there is no need to take time off from work or from activities as there are no bandages or recovery time required.
