If you’re considering a cosmetic treatment for your nose, you may have come across two main types of procedures: rhinoplasty and thread lifts. Each of these treatments is unique in its procedure, results, cost, recovery, and overall pros and cons.

Below we’ll outline both rhinoplasty and thread lifts so you can choose the cosmetic procedure that’s right for you.

Thread Lifts

A thread lift is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses sutures to lift the nose. While the end result may look similar to that of a rhinoplasty, these two cosmetic treatments differ in every other aspect.

Procedure

Thread lifts are non-invasive, which means your plastic surgeon will not make any incisions. Instead, your plastic surgeon will place polydioxanone (PDO) threads within your nose and along your nasal bridge. The threads are 100% bio-compatible and absorbable by the body. They also promote collagen formation, which promotes healthier, tighter skin.

This procedure is often referred to as a “lunchtime nose job” because it takes as little as an hour to complete and typically only requires topical anesthetic.

Results

The results of a thread lift are immediate, but the final result of your procedure may not be fully visible until after the swelling and bruising subside. The swelling should subside within a few days or weeks.

The lifted appearance of your nose after a thread lift lasts around one to two years. While the overall results of the thread lift are temporary, because the threads promote collagen production, you can expect some degree of permanent lifting.

Cost

The complexity of your thread lift, the number of threads you’ll need for your desired look, and your rhinoplasty surgeon will all determine the cost of your thread lift procedure. However, thread lift treatments typically range anywhere from $1,500 to $4,500.

Recovery

A thread lift is non-invasive, which means recovery time is shorter. Complete recovery takes only two weeks. During this recovery period, you should avoid any strenuous activities, rubbing your nose, and prolonged direct sunlight.

You may experience some swelling and bruising but should subside quickly.

Thread Lift Pros and Cons

Pros

Below are the benefits of choosing a thread lift to transform your nose.

  • Immediate results
  • Fast recovery time
  • Short procedure
  • Non-invasive

Cons

Below are the downsides of a thread lift procedure.

  • It only benefits you if you want to lift your nose. This procedure doesn’t address dorsal humps, bulbous tips, or other unwanted nose shapes.
  • Temporary results

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure that helps reshape and contour the nose.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty is a versatile surgical procedure. This means that this cosmetic treatment can address a wide range of cosmetic desires. Below are only some of the nose shapes and deformities that rhinoplasty can fix.

There is a unique and specific procedure that addresses each of these nose shapes. For example, during a dorsal hump rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon will reshape your nose by sanding down the deformed cartilage and bone. During a bulbous tip rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon will remove cartilage and adjust the nose for a smaller appearance.

Results

The results from your rhinoplasty are permanent. You will begin to see the results of your cosmetic procedure within a few weeks and continually as your swelling subsides. However, swelling in the tip of the nose may persist until a year after your rhinoplasty. After a year, you will know that the results you see in the mirror are permanent.

Cost

The type and complexity of your procedure determine the cost of your rhinoplasty. A typical rhinoplasty procedure ranges from around $4,500 to $9,000.

Recovery

Swelling and bruising will be the most intense during the first week after your rhinoplasty. Avoid showers, take time off work, and sleep with your head elevated. By the second week, your splint and bandages will come off, and you can go back to work.

You should start to see the results of your rhinoplasty around a month following the procedure. However, it could take up to a year for you to see the final results.

Rhinoplasty Pros and Cons

Pros

Below are the main benefits of choosing a rhinoplasty to reshape your nose.

  • Permanent results
  • The procedure can treat a wide range of nose shapes

Cons
